Highlights

  • Spot wildlife on a safari in Etosha National Park
  • Discover ancient rock art in Damaraland
  • Visit Africa's largest salt pan
  • Explore towering Sossusvlei dunes in the Namib Desert

Day 1: Arrive in Windhoek & Fly to Etosha National Park

Flying to Etosha National Park from Windhoek is the first step in your journey through Namibia. Your resort is situated right outside this area of wilderness protection, and you will be greeted upon arrival at the airstrip. Etosha, located in northwest Namibia, is referred to as "the great white place" by the indigenous Ovambo people because of its 1,900 square mile (4,920 sq km) salt pan that can be seen from space. Before going on a game drive into the reserve, take some time to freshen up. Because of its many spring-fed waterholes, which provide excellent wildlife sightings, especially during the dry season when animals concentrate around these critical water sources, Etosha is one of Namibia's top safari locations. Look for big cats, vibrant birdlife, endangered black rhinos, and plains game like antelopes and gazelles throughout your safari. After the journey, head back to your resort for dinner and a restful evening.

Day 2: Full-Day Game Drive in Etosha National Park

This morning you'll set off on a full-day game drive in Etosha National Park. Along the way, your safari guide will point out some of the park's diverse wildlife, which encompasses over 114 species of mammals and 350 bird species. You're likely to spot everything from Burchell's zebras and black-faced impalas to oryx, giraffes, and elephants. You will also discover more about the unique vegetation-filled landscape of Etosha, which has over 20 different kinds of plants, and the well-known salt pan, which was originally a massive lake before it dried up. When the pan is flooded by rain during the rainy season, flamingos and other migrating birds congregate in the lagoons loaded with algae. During your safari, savor lunch in the park; you'll be returned to your lodge in the late afternoon.

Day 3: Fly from Etosha National Park to Damaraland.

Fly west to Damaraland, a striking area of grasslands, canyons, and mountains that is home to the Indigenous Herero, Himba, and Damara people. Bid farewell to Etosha today. The region is especially well-known for its ancient rock paintings and geological structures that have been sculpted over millennia by wind and sand. A representative from the opulent lodge where you will be spending the next two nights will meet you at the airport.

Day 4: Damaraland & Twyfelfontein Tour.

Take a whole day to explore the top attractions in Damaraland. Begin by traveling to the Twyfelfontein area, which has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its abundance of more than 2,000 rock petroglyphs. Admire the artwork, which was created by the nomadic hunter-gatherer tribes of Namibia some 6,000 years ago and features geometric forms and animals. The welwitschia, the region's famous "living fossil plant," will also be shown to you by your guide. Explore a few of Damaraland's remarkable geological formations after that. These include the Organ Pipes, a group of dolerite pillars, and Brandberg, Namibia's highest mountain, nicknamed "fire mountain" because of its glowing sunrise and sunset. Don't miss the strange Petrified Forest, which is made up of trees that were uprooted and frozen in silt some 200 million years ago. Plan a game drive as an optional add-on to look for creatures that have adapted to the desert before heading back to your resort for supper.

Day 5: Fly from Damaraland to Sossusvlei

You'll take a morning flight to Sossusvlei and arrive at your lodge, which is located near the Namib-Naukluft National Park entrance. The park is situated in the Namib Desert, the oldest desert in the world. The Namib spans more than 1,200 miles (2,000 km) from Angola across Namibia's coast and into South Africa. Because of its shifting sand sea, the Namib is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Day 6: Full-Day Sossusvlei Tour

Explore the Sossusvlei dune belt today, a dry riverbed in the Namib Desert that is home to some of the world's tallest sand dunes. The most striking dunes in Sossusvlei, including Dune 45 and the 1,000-foot-tall (300-meter) Big Daddy, are visible. These massive sand dunes change color throughout the day, taking on hues of orange, red, and gold. Highlights of Sossusvlei also include Deadvlei, a popular Namibian photo location that is a white-clay valley filled with scores of dead camelthorn trees. You may choose to embark on an additional excursion in the afternoon to the neighboring Sesriem Canyon, which the Tsaugab River built up to four million years ago. The term originates from the fact that early explorers used ses (six) riem (leather rope straps) to drop a bucket into the 100-foot (30 m) deep canyon to collect water.

Day 7: Fly from Sossusvlei to Windhoek & Depart.

This morning, you take a flight back to Windhoek Eros Airport, capping up your desert trip. Your driver will transport you to Hosea Kutako International Airport in Windhoek so you may catch your next flight. Happy travels!
