One of the New Seven Wonders of the World, the Great Wall of China is a crucial component of China’s ancient heritage. But instead of seeing everything in a single day, you’ll hike different parts of the wall for several days with a knowledgeable guide. As you converse with locals and eat food from the area, you’ll have a deeper understanding of Chinese culture while walking the ramparts along restored sections. If the weather permits, you may even sleep close to the wall.

Highlights

  • Spend an evening in Beijing and see the city.
  • Hike along various sections of the Great Wall of China.
  • Overnight in local villages and get to know the culture.

Day-01: Arrival in Beijing.

Beijing is the world's most densely populated capital city, home to more than 21 million people. This city, one of China's Four Great Ancient Capitals, has served as the nation's political center for eight centuries. It is the location of large historical sites from the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644), such as the Temple of Heaven and the Forbidden City. The Summer Palace, an imperial garden and royal retreat situated beside a lake during the Qing Dynasty (1644 to 1911), is also located here. Beijing is a brilliant example of modernity, nevertheless. This area is home to some of the world's tallest structures. Moreover, traditional hutong lanes and antique courtyard dwellings are all but swallowed up by modern projects, high-rise flats, and retail centers. This metropolis is a megalopolis that is rapidly moving forward while maintaining a strong hold on the past. You will meet your guide at Beijing Capital International Airport upon arrival, after which you will be transferred to your hotel located in the heart of Beijing. You'll have the rest of the day free to go exploring after check-in. Alternatively, you can stay in, unwind, and take advantage of the hotel's services if you're a little jet lagged.

Day-02: Great Wall Hike: Jinshanling & Wohushan

Prepare yourself for an intense hike along China's Great Wall. The most well-known landmark in this nation was initially constructed in the 7th century BCE, and over the ages, it was enlarged by several dynasties, most notably the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The defensive nature of the fortress was demonstrated by the regular placement of watchtowers, beacon towers, barracks, and garrison stations along the wall. The Great Wall is divided into many sections due to its immense size, many of which have undergone renovations and restorations. Together, the wall stretches 13,171 miles (21,196 kilometers) in an east-west arc, with a large portion of it heading north toward Mongolia. About 80 miles (130 km) northeast of Beijing is Jinshanling, the first section you'll visit today. It's a rebuilt portion of the wall that General Xu Da had ordered constructed in 1368. After meeting your guide at the hotel in the morning, you'll drive for two hours to reach Luanping County and the Jinshanling area. The east end of the segment is where the five-mile (eight-kilometer) hike begins. It takes around three hours to complete at a leisurely pace so you may take in the breathtaking views of the Jinshanling Mountains. You will ultimately come to a halt at Wuyan Tower, a watchtower with breathtaking views of the nearby Simatai stretch of the Great Wall. You will descend from the wall to the entryway after reaching the end of the Jinshanling segment. You'll stop for lunch at a neighboring restaurant at this point. After that, you'll drive a little distance to the Wohushan area to hike for a few more hours. This section was constructed on stony Wohu Hill, which has two prominent peaks like a couple of sleeping tigers. There are perhaps 20 watchtowers along the 8 miles (13 km) portion as it snakes around the peak. Because Wohushan has not undergone renovations, fewer tourists visit it, allowing you to observe the aging process' natural effects on these fortifications. After finishing the hike, you'll stay the night in a homestay in the neighboring town of Gubeikou rather than traveling back to Beijing. It's a fantastic way to get a taste of the local way of life. An exceptional encounter in China.

Day-03: Great Wall Hike: Gubeikou & Jinshanling - Transfer to Jiankou

Following breakfast, you will hike eastward from the Gubeikou region and return up the wall. The entire hike today is around 6 miles (10 km) long and takes 5–6 hours to finish. On a clear day in the spring or summer, you can see views of lush mountains and peaks that reach the horizon. Hiking atop the wall is forbidden in a section of the path that passes through a military sector that is under strict control. To avoid this part of the hike, descend from the wall, pass through a small settlement, and then hike back to the Jinshanling section. Afterwards, you will drive to the Jiankou area and spend the night at a guesthouse run by the locals.

Day-04: Great Wall Hike: Jiankou & Mutianyu

You will hike around 6 miles (10 km) today, with a particular emphasis on the Jiankou stretch. Because it is situated atop precipitous peaks overlooking a precipice, this section of the wall is the most untamed. Jiankou is regarded as one of the most beautiful sections even though it is the roughest because of the numerous viewpoints that provide breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside.
It should be noted that this region is off-limits to tourists. Additionally, you should use extra caution when trekking because of the previously mentioned steep gradients and unpaved terrain. Nevertheless, your guide is an excellent resource, and your efforts will be rewarded when you see those breathtaking vistas. You will hike for approximately five hours in total before transferring to the base of the Mutianyu portion, where you'll eat a late lunch at a nearby restaurant. You'll then drive back to Beijing after that. After your tour drops you off at your hotel, you can spend the evening as you choose.

Day-05: Departure from Beijing

You will be picked up from your hotel by a vehicle in the morning and taken to the Beijing airport in time for your return flight. This brings an extraordinary adventure through China to an end. Until the next occasion
