The University of Eastern Finland was formed by merging two formerly independent universities in Eastern Finland, the University of Joensuu and the University of Kuopio. They ceased to exist when the University opened in January 2010. The new Universities Act extends Finnish universities’ autonomy even further by granting each institution a unique legal identity, either as a public company or a foundation.
