Trips to wonderful areas like the ruins of the ancient villages of Leptis Magna and Sabrata have been impossible in recent years due to the political environment. During our expedition, we will also visit Tripoli, where we will see the Christian district as well as Ottoman and colonial-era architecture.
An organizational gathering will be held at Tunis International Airport in Tunisia's capital. After arriving and completing visa requirements, transfer to the hotel. Depending on our arrival time, we will spend the afternoon or evening visiting Libya's capital.
After breakfast, we will depart Tripoli and go west to the Jabal Nafusa region, which is primarily inhabited by Berbers. To begin, we will visit Qasr Al-Hajj, a remarkable granary that was also a stronghold where the local populace could seek refuge. It is an excellent example of combining defensive and commercial architecture. Then we'll proceed to Nalut to see a similar walled castle-granary, but in a very different setting, on a steep slope. We should arrive in Ghadames in the afternoon or early evening, a town known as "the jewel of Sahara". It was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List due to its remarkable architecture and history. We'll stay at the neighborhood hotel.
Starting in the morning, we will be able to explore Ghadames' spectacular architecture on a walking tour. We'll have the chance to get lost in the maze of narrow alleyways that are abruptly closed by small squares, antique mosques, and madrasas. We will see ancient aqueducts and observe people in one of northern Africa's oldest bazaars. We aim to eat lunch at a typical residence, where we will be able to sample regional cuisine. In the afternoon, we will travel to Ras al-Ghoul, often known as "the Mountain of Ghosts". These are the remains of Roman fortifications. Then we'll go to Grand Erg Oriental, where we'll be able to observe the stunning landscapes of northern Sahara. We'll stay till dusk, then return to Ghadames.
After breakfast, we will depart for our return trip to Tripoli. En route, we will stop in Jabal Nafusa to view Qasr at Kabaw, which are fortifications that date back to the beginning of civilisation and settlements in North Africa. Next, we'll drive to Tormisa, a little village with a great view of the surrounding country from a cliff. While returning to Tripoli, we will stop at Gharyan to explore traditional residences and visit ceramic workshops run by true masters, as documented in Roman chronicles. In the evening, we'll arrive in Tripoli. Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.
Following breakfast, we will embark on a full-day excursion to the ruins of the ancient city of Leptis Magna. They are among the best-preserved examples of Roman architecture outside Europe. We will also see buildings from later Byzantine times, such as bathhouses, an amphitheatre, and historic city walls with gates. On our journey back to Tripoli, we'll stop by the remnants of Villa Silene, which formerly belonged to a wealthy Roman family. Depending on our arrival time, we will go for a walk around the Tripoli districts, which have conserved buildings dating back to the nineteenth century and the colonial era. Dinner and night's rest in Tripoli.
After breakfast, we head east of Tripoli to see the Sabrata ruins. It is a unique location with ruins of Phoenician, Roman, and Byzantine buildings and structures. We will conclude our excursion by wandering around the remains of the first early Christian churches. In the afternoon, return to Tripoli. We shall see what we were unable to view on prior days. Dinner and night's rest in Tripoli.
Following breakfast, we will visit a Second World War cemetery where Polish soldiers are buried. We'll take a journey to the Christian quarter, where we'll discover the maze of tight and winding alleyways. One of the highlights of the day will be a visit to the triumphal arch built for Emperor Marcus Aurelius in the second century AD. Dinner and overnight rest at the motel. There will be time to do some final shopping. In the afternoon, transfer to the airport for a trip to Tunis.
