Welcome to Rovaniemi, the gateway to the Arctic Circle and capital of Lapland, Finland’s northernmost region. This five-day program is designed to make the most of the snowy winter months, including activities in the stunning frozen environment that surrounds the city. Every day delivers a new once-in-a-lifetime outdoor adventure, from floating in frigid open water to chasing the northern lights, ice fishing, and hiking—and even sliding!—through a snow-covered canyon.
Welcome to the realm of Santa and the Northern Lights. Rovaniemi, the capital of Lapland, will be your base for the duration of the journey. A vehicle will pick you up, and you'll spend some time seeing the city, visiting museums, and shopping for souvenirs. End the day with a lunch at one of Rovaniemi's luxurious restaurants, or go to a resort for a traditional Lapland kota dinner. Rovaniemi, surrounded by breathtaking Arctic landscape and a variety of activities, is an excellent starting point for visiting Lapland and immersing yourself in Indigenous Sámi culture. There are year-round thrills, from watching the northern lights and taking snowmobile rides in the winter to experiencing the midnight sun and hiking in the summer—though this itinerary is designed to appreciate the cooler months.
Feel the lightness of your body as you float on an Arctic lake between ice slabs. You will descend from a dock into the frigid water. No need to worry about the cold: you'll be protected by a high-quality waterproof "rescue suit" that will keep you warm and dry—so let your body and mind float and enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime trip. This exercise can also be done in the evening, possibly even under the Northern Lights. Later, you will depart the city for a 4.5-hour wilderness tour. The ideal place to watch the northern lights is in these dark outskirts, which are devoid of light pollution. These green lights dancing across the sky become brighter and more visible as you move closer to the North Pole, making Finland one of the greatest spots to watch them. You'll be accompanied by a guide who knows the ideal places to halt and see this phenomena, and there is an opportunity to upgrade to a tour with a professional photographer.
Today, you will explore Korouoma Canyon, a protected area about 90 minutes east of Rovaniemi. This natural habitat, which spans 20 miles (30 kilometers) and is 430 feet (130 meters) deep, is unearthly in winter, complete with frozen waterfalls and snow-laden trees. It is a wildlife haven, so keep an eye out for eagles, lynx, and moose. As you travel through the ethereal environment with a guide, a track will lead you on a 3 mile (5 km) route—and you'll discover that sometimes the best way to deal with descents is to slide down! Along the walk, your guide will teach you about Arctic ecology, provide useful survival tips, and share their enthusiasm for Lapland. Finally, they will create an open fire and serve a great Finnish BBQ lunch.
It is time for a survival-themed Arctic adventure! Strap on your snowshoes and head into the freezing tundra. Your outdoor guide will show you how to navigate this harsh environment and take advantage of your surroundings in a survival crisis. They will demonstrate the technique of ice fishing, which entails drilling a hole in the frozen lake. If you catch a fish, your guide will demonstrate how to prepare and grill it over the fire. Don't worry if you're not a natural ice fisherman; a Finnish barbecue snack will be provided regardless. In the evening, everyone boarded the Aurora Snow Train. This snowmobile-pulled carriage will take you to a distant location away from artificial lights, giving you the best opportunity of witnessing the northern lights. Crossing the gorgeous snowy environment to reach a kota wilderness lodge, the group will congregate around a blazing bonfire for refreshments and hot drinks. A knowledgeable photographic guide will be on hand to assist you in capturing the northern lights. Even if the green glow does not appear, you will still be able to enjoy the tranquility of the snowy woodland in the darkness and solitude.
As your Lapland experience comes to an end, your driver will pick you up from the hotel and transport you to the airport for your departure flight. Safe travels!
