Drive to the Darwaza Burning Gas Crater in the afternoon (3.5 hours); known to the locals as "The Door to Hell" Natural gas reserves are abundant near Darwaza. Former Soviet scientists discovered a natural gas-filled tunnel while drilling in 1971. The drilling rig's base gave apart, creating a massive hole that was 70 meters in diameter. They made the decision to burn it off to prevent the release of toxic gas. The gas is still blazing today, defying the geologists' expectations that it would be extinguished in a few days.
