You can see the main attractions of Shanghai in five days, along with a day trip to Suzhou, one of the most charming cities in the area. You will first take in tours of Shanghai’s beautiful parks and ancient neighborhoods, including the now-Bohemian French Concession quarter. Then it’s off to Tongli, which is next to Suzhou, a town on a canal so picturesque it’s called the “Venice of Asia.”
When you arrive in Shanghai, you will board a bullet train from the airport to Longyang Road Station, where you will meet up with a private guide. From here, you'll go to your central Shanghai hotel. You can go exploring after unpacking and getting settled after the lengthy travel. Shanghai is a port city on the Yangtze River delta, a worldwide economic powerhouse with a rich history, delicious cuisine, and plenty of upscale shopping. You may visit an art gallery, see an evening opera or acrobatic show, or enjoy the varied nightlife alternatives, which range from cozy lounge bars to exciting nightclubs, if you can't wait to explore the city's cultural and entertainment options. If you're too exhausted from your flight, simply have supper at one of the city's Michelin-starred eateries, then retire to your hotel for a restful night in preparation for the next day.
You are going to the ancient Yu Garden after breakfast. Yu means "pleasant and satisfying," and the five acres that make up this historic green park are the epitome of those qualities. The exotic flora in the landscape dates back over 400 years to the Ming Dynasty, and includes a ginkgo tree that is as old as the garden itself and spring bamboo. Pavilions, ponds, tea houses, rockeries, cloisters, and covered bridges are a few other striking architectural features. You will first tour the Yuyuan Market and try some street cuisine, and then you will go to the French Concession, which is a waterfront area. The French ruled it from 1849 until 1943, and its broad, verdant boulevards are well-known. These days, it's a bohemian haven full of hip restaurants, wine bars, boutiques, and breweries. Once the tour is over, you'll return to your hotel and will have the evening free.
You will depart in the morning for the lovely city of Suzhou, which is located in the riverlands around 70 miles (112 km) west of Shanghai. Claimed to be the "Venice of Asia," Suzhou is a historic city situated on China's Grand Canal that dates back to 514 BCE. A beautiful gondola ride on the narrow waters amidst the historic residences, historic bridges, and blooming gardens is the ideal way to pass the time in this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Speaking of which, the Master of the Nets Garden is one of the green areas you'll see here. Dating back to 1140 ACE, this neighborhood garden is regarded as one of China's most exquisite. Following a few hours of leisure on the waterways, you'll return to Shanghai and spend the rest of the evening at leisure.
The traditional lake town of Tongli is a 30-minute drive from Suzhou in the morning. This is one of the most picturesque places in all of China, with its canals lined with trees and arched stone bridges. It's a terrific place to hang out, unwind, and take lots of pictures. You'll transfer to the Suzhou railway station and catch a train back to Shanghai after lunch and a guided tour of the area. After that, you'll head to your hotel and spend the rest of the day at leisure.
At the scheduled time, your guide and driver will transfer you to the airport, where you'll catch your flight home. This concludes your grand China adventure. See you soon.
