This 5-day journey provides the ultimate cultural immersion in Portugal’s burgeoning capital, nicknamed ‘The City of Seven Hills’. Allow a local guide to show you old ruins, cobbled lanes, and trendy neighborhoods—as well as the lovely UNESCO-listed village of Sintra, surrounded by parks and gardens. Along with guided excursions, you’ll have free time to explore on your own, rounding out your enjoyable experience.
Welcome to Portugal! When you arrive at Lisbon's airport, a driver will meet you and transport you to your hotel. Take some time to recover before you begin exploring. When the evening arrives, you'll participate in a gourmet cuisine tour in Lisbon—a fantastic way to discover the city for the first time! Wear comfortable walking shoes because you and your English-speaking guide will meander through a series of authentic winding alleys, tasting the incredible flavors of Portuguese gastronomy, particularly in the neighborhood of Campo de Ourique—practically a city within a city—which defines Lisbon's food culture and gastronomic trends. Over the course of four hours, you'll visit seven locations that masterfully combine heritage and modernity. Experience how locals have transformed restaurant concepts, such as a market and a hotel school, while sampling world-renowned gourmet specialties.
Today, you'll explore Lisbon on a half-day tour that includes significant sites and some well-kept secrets, revealing the city's distinct spirit and authenticity. This will be a great trip as you travel throughout the city on the yellow tram system, interspersed with leisurely strolls. Make sure you wear good walking shoes.
After breakfast at your Lisbon hotel, you will embark on an excursion to the nearby fairytale village of Sintra, nestled in the forested foothills of the city. This is one of the best ways to see some of Portugal's finest castles, ancient houses, and royal palaces. Sintra—a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995—is widely regarded as one of Europe's most beautiful, enchanting, and romantic destinations. During the tour, you will get the opportunity to explore some of the most renowned landmarks, beginning with a visit to the Royal Pena National Palace, which is built on the ruins of a former 16th-century monastery and offers beautiful vistas. Later, you'll travel to the quieter, less-visited portion of Sintra (the west half of the village) to explore The Cork Convent of Capuchos, a breathtaking natural setting erected 500 years ago for Capuchin monks/friars. Your final visit in the afternoon will be Cabo da Roca, Europe's designated 'westernmost point' located on Sintra's coastal cliffs. Keep your camera nearby as you pass more old mansions and palaces.
Today is your free day to explore one of Western Europe's most beautiful capitals in any way you see fit, including catching up on any lost opportunities from prior days. If you're ready to tackle the streets on foot, make sure to bring walking shoes to deal with Lisbon's steep hills, while many attractions are located downtown, particularly in the Baixa and Rossio neighborhoods. This is where you'll discover significant city monuments, restaurants, boutiques, and the world's oldest bookstore, Livraria Bertrand. If you haven't already, visit the city's two oldest neighborhoods, Alfama and Graça. These small, winding lanes ooze with Lisbon charm and are ideal for wandering and photographing. Keep an eye out for vendors offering genuine handicrafts. For a taste of residential Lisbon, visit the green suburb of Príncipe Real, which features charming restaurants, cafes, and boutique shops, as well as the city's Botanic Gardens and Museum of Natural History and Science. Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara offers a stunning perspective of the city and river, particularly after sunset. It is time to say farewell to Portugal! Depending on the time of your flight, take one more walk through the streets of Lisbon, possibly picking up some last-minute mementos. At the specified time, you will be picked up from your hotel and transported to the airport for your departure. Safe travels.
