Muscat lays the groundwork for future developments in Oman, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in Omani culture through cuisine, religion, and local customs. By day, visit some of Muscat's most popular attractions, including the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, one of the region's most impressive mosques, the Royal Opera House Muscat, a superb cultural institution, and the Bait Al Zubair Museum. Plan ahead of time and dress appropriately for the mosque. Long pants and long-sleeved shirts for men, and the same for women, with head scarves for the ladies. Check the opening hours and keep in mind that Friday is a holy day, therefore non-Muslims should plan their visits around other days. Take a tour of the Opera House or check their schedule for upcoming events or concerts. In the evening, head to Muscat’s old town, known as Mutrah, and visit the Mutrah Corniche, a lively waterfront area. Take a stroll along the promenade, and visit the Mutrah Souq to browse traditional Omani goods. The souq was one of our favorites in the Middle East with a lot on offer but also a comfortable atmosphere (there’s just the right amount of haggling without it feeling at all overly assertive).
We chose to visit Nizwa from Jabal al-Akhdar, but Nizwa is also available as a day excursion from Muscat for those who have limited time in Oman. Nizwa, the former Omani capital, is a historic city with a rich cultural legacy and magnificent surrounding surroundings. A day tour should include visits to the bustling souqs and the Nizwa Fort. An excellent choice for history buffs and shoppers. It's crucial noting the souq timing before going because the businesses close throughout the day.
